Master the art of minimalist travel packing. Learn how to fit everything you need into a single carry-on bag for any trip length.
There is a certain liberation in stepping off a plane with everything you own on your back. No baggage claim, no lost luggage, no wrestling with a 30-kilogram suitcase up a cobblestone street at midnight.
Start with a capsule wardrobe
The secret to packing light is not owning less — it is choosing pieces that work together. Aim for a colour palette of two or three neutral tones. Every item should pair with at least two others.
- 3–4 tops (mix of casual and smart)
- 2 bottoms (one versatile trouser, one shorts or skirt)
- 1 lightweight jacket or cardigan
- 2 pairs of shoes maximum (wear the heavier pair on the plane)
The one-week rule
Most travellers can survive a month on one week of clothes if they plan to do laundry. Many hotels and hostels offer laundry services, and hand-washing a few items in the sink each evening is surprisingly quick.
Toiletries: the biggest space thief
Decant everything into reusable 50ml bottles. Buy shampoo, conditioner, and body wash at your destination — it saves weight and supports local shops. Leave the hairdryer at home; most accommodation provides one.
Safe travels, and enjoy the freedom of travelling light.
